On the number one/numero uno undercard At the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA- 29 year old Aussie Michael “The Great” Katsidis (26W-2L-21KO’s) from Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, faught 27 year old mexican Vicente Escobedo (21W-2L-13KO’s) from Woodland, California,USA in a 12 round fight for the interim WBO lightweight belt.
Michael Katsidis came in well conditioned and was able to out work the former 2004 olympian Escobedo. Escobedo tried to work off the jab but Katsidis continued to bully him around the ring with fast combonations and off angle punches that in the end Katsidis dominated in workrate that won him the fight;although, not without a war as Katsidis face was battered by Escobedo hard punches but not enough as the score cards read in the end: 115-113 and 118-110 for Katsidis and a contraversial 116-112 for Escobedo. This was a great victory for Katsidis and his Trainer/Manager Brendon smith as this victory catapults Katsidis to future big fights as he continues to make a name in the lightweight division where he is currently the #6 lightweight in the world.
Official Verdict: Michael “the Great Katsidis, winner by way of split decision is the new interim WBO lightweight champion of the world.
