Pongsaklek Wonjongkam entered the ring for his 77′th profesional fight of his career to retain the WBC interim Flyweight belt with a dominating performance.
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam had won the WBC flyweight title in 2001 over and went on to defend that belt 17 consecutive times before losing it by way of decision to Japan’s Daisuke Naito in 2007, then he went on to reclaim the WBC interim Flyweight title in April-24,2009 with a decision over Mexico’s Julio Cesar Miranda.
Pongsaklek made the whole fight look like an easy target practice from the opening bell of round 1 with Pongsaklek having Masuda on the retreat landing a variety of punches that included some heavy left hands. In the 2nd round, Wonjongkam stalked Masuda around the ring landing big punches to the head. Many of the punches knocked Masuda backwards, causing him to stumble and almost fall down. Late in the round, the southpaw Wonjongkam clobbered Masuda with a right-left combination that sent Masuda down for the first time in the fight. Wonjongkam finished out the round strong, teeing off on Masuda with big left hands as Wonjongkam tried without luck to finish him in this round.
In the 3rd round, Masuda came out trying to land some shots of his own. However, Wonjongkam easily ducked and picked off the shots from Masuda. Wonjongkam then continued to plaster Masuda with big shots for the remainder of the round.
in the 4th round, Wonjongkam seemed to increase the pressure he was putting on Masuda in the 4th round, hitting him with increasingly harder shots that were knocking Masuda off balance on impact. Masuda desperately fought back but continued to take a lot of punishment. At the end of the round, Wonjongkam landed a huge right hand that knocked Masuda two feet across the ring causing him to turn his back on Wonjongkam.
In the 5th round, Wonjongkam closed the distance and fought most of the round at close range, which enabled Wonjongkam to land sharp uppercuts to the head and chopping punches. Masuda was limited to only a couple of weak punches in the round.
In the 6th, Wonjongkam stayed close to Masuda, hammering him with short uppercuts and powerful right hands to the head. After landing two left uppercuts followed by a big right uppercut, Wonjongkam put Masuda down for the final time. The Austrailian referee Brad Vocale immediately stopped the bout and had to help a badly dazed Masuda back to his corner.
The victory for Wonjongkam, 32, puts him in a position for a 3rd fight against the current WBC flyweight champion Daisuke Naito, who Wonjongkam was beaten by in a 12 round decision in 2007 to lose his WBC title which he had held for six long years. In their second fight last year in March 2008, Naito and Wonjongkam fought to a 12 round draw.
Promoter Wirat Wachirarattanawongse plans to have Pongsaklek challenge world campion Daisuke Naito early next year after another WBC interim flyweight defense as to also wait for Naito to get threw his scheduled fight of November-19-2009 against Koki Kameda.
Official verdict: Pongsaklek Wonjongkam retains the WBC Interim flyweight championship of the world by way of sixth round TKO.
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam :
“I think I was able to calmly get control of the bout better than any time before. I was very relaxed as I fought,” I think that Masuda lacks experience.”
“I really want to fight Naito and win my belt back,” even if its early next year, “I will wait for it.“
